Cole bags quinella at Bay as The Wild Side steals feature from stablemate

- ANDREW O’TOOLE

PHIL COLE unveiled two of his stable stars, The Wild Side and Commissar, for a fresh-up quinella in the Carlton and United Breweries Handicap – the feature event at Fannie Bay yesterday.

The Wild Side, who had not started since finishing at the tail of the field in the Broome Cup on August 18, stormed home to collar her stablemate, who was having his first run for nine months, and in the process set up a $43 quinella.

Jolly Boy and Commissar led in the early and middle stages, tracked by the warm fav- ourite Divine Red, who looked the main threat as the field swung for home. But try as he might, Divine Red could not get past a dogged Commissar, who looked the likely winner until The Wild Side and jockey Jarrod Todd appeared on the scene over the last 100m.

Such was her finishing burst, The Wild Side won comfortably by an everwidening length-and-a-half margin.

Mazzaro (trainer Tayarn Halter), aided by a patient Raymond Vigar ride, hit the line strongly for an impressive win in the Hot100 Handicap (1300m).

Halter bagged a double on the day when Puzzled Princess (Vanessa Arnott) showed her rivals a clean pair of heels in the Mix 104.9 Handicap.

Kerry Petrick, enjoying a few days R and R on the Gold Coast, would have been celebrating with her stable quinella of Can La and Liberty’s Torch in the Signcity Maiden.

Marbel Duke (Gary Clarke/ Carl Spry) capped some consistent recent runs with a solid victory in the Ladbrokes Handicap.

He burst clear at the 200m mark and scored nicely by two lengths and more from My Snip.
