Saltwater Cafe
THE cafe at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is under new management. The owners of the Cafe Central at Rapid Creek took over the lease in the middle of last year and called the venue the Saltwater Cafe.
It gained its name from the fact that the venue overlooks Fannie Bay.
Saltwater Cafe owner Daniel Treacy said the cafe was an opportunity for him to step out and branch into different styles of catering.
The cafe can cater for birthdays, weddings and other functions.
“We were excited to move in there and have the function space and to cater for night events,” he said.
Mr Treacy said the cafe was centred around fresh produce and seafood.
“It adds to what were’ trying to bring with fresh seafood and being on the water. If you’re sitting on the deck there you can smell, see and taste the salt,” he said.
They are serving up dishes such as barra, seared tuna salad and avocado smash, soft shell crab with chilli scramble.
They also have a range of sweets, from cakes and muffins. “For the all-day cafe menu we’re offering all the regular cafe style food and we’re working on gluten and vegan friendly food,” he said. “We’re trying to cater to the mid-range market of not too cheap and not too over the top. We make everything fresh
“We want to serve up good food. People can pick it up and use the grass out the front.”
He said they were looking to model this cafe off Cafe Central, which has become a local haunt for residents in the area.
“Excited as well as daunting, we’re happy with our model at Cafe Central with good coffee and consistent food and high end service and we thought it we could bring that over and replicate it,” he said.
He said they were focusing on bringing locals to the venue to enjoy the space and relax.
“Café Central has worked by involving the locals and that’s the market we want to focus on,” he said.
“There are lots of houses nearby. That’s the market that will keep you busy.
“We’re excited to get the locals back, we want to build it into that iconic location again.”
