ALOCAL wine distributer is looking to educate those who enjoy a tipple on the finer details of the wine. Piper Collective director Kelly Hope is holding a range of wine tastings and intimate wine education workshops over the next months to impart knowledge on Top End residents.
Sommelier Jeff Salt will come to Darwin this week for two events and Evan Gill a sommelier of Margaret River’s Vasse Felix Estate the following week.
“We’re just trying to bring some expertise to Darwin,”
“This is stepping it up a bit and we’ve done a few tastings and now they can learn about the wine.”
A sommelier is an expert in wine and usually work in restaurants to pair food with the right
drop. Mr Salt will hold a wine tasting of six wines while guests learn about the tasting notes and nibble on cheese.
“Jeff will run you through each wine region and help you to enhance the aroma and taste of the wine,” Ms Kelly said.
The Hour of Power with Jeff Salt will be held on Thursday May 2 from 6.30pm.
During the day on Thursday Mr Salt will run an in-depth full day course on the ins and outs of wine.
You’ll learn the stages of grape growing, styles of wine, how to store and serve wine and how to taste and pair wine.
Ms Kelly said for those serious about their wine it was important to know to look after the plonk before the bottle was opened.
“Wine needs to be under a certain temperature and it doesn’t like vibrations, sunlight and heat,” she said.
On May 7, Mr Gill of Western Australia’s Vasse Felix Estate will hold a wine tasting of their new vintage.
Attendees will be able to sip on wine and eat cheese while Mr Gill explains the new wines available this year.
“It’s great to have one of Australia’s leading wine estates come up and see Darwin as a great place to market their wine,” Ms Hope said.
