Get Forked
ANEW cafe in the Darwin’s CBD is endeavouring to shake-up the traditional cafe experience. Society Cafe on Cavenagh St opened last month and has a focus on providing healthy meals. Society Cafe owner Tom Jones, who also owns a gym, said he jumped at the opportunity to open a cafe as it was something he had always wanted to do.
“This is my first venture. I got offered an opportunity to get involved and I own a gym and this is a big learning curve and it’s a bit of self development learning development,” he said.
He said they had a typical a la carte menu including salads, burgers, toasties and avocado on toast but also offered a range of poke bowls and ramen. “Everything is roasted — it’s all prepared fresh. It’s not crappy food,” Mr Jones said.
He said the ramen noodle bowls were their
take on the Japanese dish.
“The ramen noodles are slightly different and we make our own kimchi,” he said.
“The broth is slightly different, we’re building it to have the broths brewing for days not hours.”
Ramen flavours include spiced tofu and mushroom, and Korean style ramen.
They offer a range of poke bowls — which is a traditional Hawaiian dish.
“It’s like a deconstructed sushi roll. Just without the raw fish,” he said.
He said people can choose between a range of options to build their poke bowl.
To begin with you pick a base of super greens, brown or white rice, then a protein and then you choose a topping of avocado, corn salsa, pickled root vegetables, roasted pineapple and ginger, kimchi, baked beetroot or cauliflower, then there is a choice of sauces and crunchy condiments from nuts, seeds and crisp shallots. Their coffee is sourced from a new Adelaide roaster Society of Coffee.
Mr Jones said the roast is a mixture of beans from Zambia and Columbia. He said the roast went well with milks. Mr Jones said her was also looking to use the space for community functions, be it art exhibitions, community meetings or comedy shows.
He encouraged anyone with an idea to get in touch. Society Cafe is open Tuesday through to Friday from 6am to 2pm and Saturday 7am to noon.
