Tails will be wagging as Million Paws Walk teams step out

- LAUREN ROBERTS

DARWIN dogs will be putting their best paw forward as they strut 3km around Jingili Water Gardens to raise funds for a barking mad cause.

The RSPCA Million Paws Walk starts at 8am today and is the biggest annual fundraiser for the national charity — held across 75 locations with over 100,000 people and pets expected to take part.

Territory animal lovers Craig Muir and Kerri-Ann Laurence have raised about $9000 for the RSPCA this year.

Their team, Top End Top Dogs, is leading the national scoreboard.

“Last year after Cyclone Marcus we held a lawn sale to raise money for the shelter. It went brilliantly so this year we thought to raise money for Million Paws Walk we would throw Australia’s biggest lawn sale,” Mr Muir said.

”It took 12 volunteers over 200 hours ... and in the end we raised a huge $5858 towards our fundraising team.”

RSPCA Darwin’s shelter is full, with 28 cats and kittens and 32 dogs and puppies looking for their fur-ever homes right now.

One of them, Athena, arrived in the shelter in January weighing just 12.5kg with two small puppies. She was too skinny to make milk any more. Four months later, Athena is 8kg heavier and ready for a new home.
