NATIONAL FAMILIES WEEK ADVERTISING FEATURE Couple puts children first

-

DARWIN’S Louise Poulson followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a Family Carer after growing up in a household which provided a safe place for vulnerable kids.

After experiencing and being part of this nurturing environment, Louise and her husband Trevor decided to register as Family Carers too and set up their own home to support children and young people.

Louise and Trevor have been fostering for three years and currently have care of two children as well as full-time care of a family member since he was a baby.

Louise’s inspiration to take on this work came from her mother Dawn who had gained a strong reputation for opening her home as a safe place for children and young people and giving them somewhere to go.

“There were so many kids coming through my Mother’s home, we could see there was a real need for more people like her, providing a safe place and loving care for kids, so we registered to be carers,” Mrs Poulson said.

“We think it’s really important to have Aboriginal carers growing up Aboriginal children and we are proud to be doing our part.

“We couldn’t imagine life without all of our children and we enjoy helping them in any way we can.”
