Jessica on Territory trek to rescue Walers

- EZRA HOLT

A WOMAN is fighting to save a rare breed of horse linked to Australia’s wartime history.

Jessica Liston is set to bring 20 horses from a wild herd found wandering in the Northern Territory to Victoria.

It’s hoped the horses — which are the same “Walers” breed light-horsemen used in World War I — will find new homes through adoption.

“The more people learn about them the more this will increase the demand for the breed,” Ms Liston said

“They could work as kids’ ponies, therapy horses — they could be competition horses.

“I’ve got a one-year-old boy and I put him on the back of one of the Walers.”

A group of indigenous horse wranglers will help capture and transport the wild horses from the Territory to Ms Liston’s property at Clarkefield near Gisborne.

Horses already moved are being used for leadership and team-building programs.
