Districts skipper in charge

- GREY MORRIS

AN UNBEATEN century by Southern Districts skipper Graeme Beghin has set his side up for outright points in their Darwin Premier Grade cricket match against Waratah.

Beghin will resume on 107 at Gardens Oval after a brilliant 71-ball stay at the crease that saw him reach the boundary nine times and clear it on seven occasions.

That was after his bowlers dispatched Waratah for a miserly 105, spinner Matt Hammond and fast-medium Nathan Hangan grabbing three wickets each.

Districts reached 4-239 at stumps, a lead of 134 with a day left to gain maximum points from the match.

Nightcliff’s resurgence continued at Kahlin Oval where Brenton Piggot’s 85 and an opening partnership of 89 between Matt Spoors (57) and Adi Dave (39) lifted them to 293.

Skipper Udara Weerasinghe’s decision to bat after winning the toss proved to be the right one as the Darwin bowlers struggled to find the right length.

Weerasinghe will turn to his bowlers when the game resumes today to secure a second win in as many weeks.

“While the score of 293 was pleasing, we now have to bowl well if we want to win this game,’’ he told the Sunday Territorian.

“It’s a very fast outfield and it’s important we stick to basics – line and length.’’

UDARA WEERASINGHE to make 156 against Tracy Village. The Power had tailender Kyle Gardiner’s unbeaten 34 to thank for clearing 150 after their top order failed to come to grips with the bowling of Ben May (3-30) and Coby Edmondstone (3-55).

Alex Bleakley’s 43 and Todd Watson’s 40 also boosted the scoreboard as the maroon caps beat a regular path back to the pavilion.

In-form Village batsman Callum Hotham’s unbeaten 35 steered the home side to 2-74 at stumps and 83 runs short of first-innings points.
