Flasher stayed on bus Driver refused plea to act as man exposed his genitals

- CRAIG DUNLOP

A DARWIN bus driver let an elderly man remain on board despite exposing himself and fondling his genitals in front of women and children.

A fellow passenger, who asked not to be named, told the Sunday Territorian she was disgusted with the way the incident happened.

The passenger, who works as a chef, was on her way to work in the city on the number 10 bus shortly after midday on Friday, when she was confronted with “a gentleman pulling his penis out and exposing himself”.

“He pulled his penis out and started playing with himself,” she said.

“I have screamed and said ‘you put that away’.

“The bus was full of kids, women, children, families.

“We have all had to move up the back of the bus.”

The woman said the driver responded aggressively towards her when she alerted him to the situation.

“He said, ‘sorry, I’m not going to do anything, I’ll be late’,” she said.

Having screamed at the man, she said he “just sat there with his head in his hands the rest of the trip”, while she called police.

She said bus drivers should be given more power to kick rogue passengers off of buses and should be more willing to do so. An NT Police spokeswoman confirmed they had received a report of an “elderly male exposing himself by pulling his genitals out of his pants”. “He was asked by the complainant to put it away,” the spokeswoman said.

Transit security and police met at the city bus stop and spoke with the man when the bus arrived, she said.

A Buslink spokesman confirmed the man was allowed to stay on board until the end of the route.

“On being advised of the action by the complainant, the driver contacted the appropriate authorities to attend.

“The man was detained by police at the final destination of the bus and this is now a police matter.

“Buslink are unable to comment further.”

The spokesman declined to comment on the woman’s criticism.
