Fashion takes centre stage at Derby Day

Fannie Bay proves top birthday bet

- JUDITH AISTHORPE

THREE generations of the Natar family celebrated in style at the Ladbrokes NT Derby Day.

Family and friends gathered for Nicky Natar’s 50th birthday including her daughter Renae and 12-week-old granddaughter Athena Natar.

The crew arrived in a stretched Hummer.

Smartly dressed in a floral outfit, little Athena calmly sat through her first race meet.

“It’s a great family day out, it’s nice you get to enjoy the day and place a few bets,” Nicky said. She said she didn’t know who she was going to place her bets on.

Thousands made their way down to the Darwin Turf Club for an afternoon of champagne and a punt on the neddies.

Rosie Curran has been attending the Darwin Cup Carnival events for the past 20 years. Ms Curran, who came along with her friend Pat Fulton, opted to buck the trend of wearing a dress or skirt and wore a collared shirt, bow tie and pants.

“I’m tired of doing the dress thing, I just wanted to think outside the square,” she said.

Madelaine Cvirn came dressed in a long-sleeved white dress with several friends.

“Racing is one of my favourite events of the dry season, I love the classic black and white of the day,” she said.

“Generally my outfit takes a bit of planning, but Derby Day is just a bit of fun.”

Dressed to the nines, Hannah West entered Fashions on the Field.

She wore a black sheer top paired with a tiered black and white patterned skirt.

She also wore a black fascinator and black accessories.

Ms West said all of her outfit was either purchased or made locally in Darwin.
