Weeona clan hold Cup aces

- GREG ALDAM

THE Boundless Possible Chief Minister’s Cup headlines a big 11-race program at the Winnellie Park greyhounds tonight.

This race is an excellent guide and lead-up to the fastapproaching Darwin Cup heats and final.

Regular Top End visitor Stephen Whyte holds the key to the race with five runners, and there does not appear to be a lot between any of them.

Possibly Weeona Jimmy, who has drawn ideally in box one, has the early speed to lead and he could prove hard to run down.

But the likes of Weeona Pete and Weeona Bont should get a nice trail into the race, and they are capable of making their presence felt in the run home.

There are three local hopes including No Stress for Ron Phillips and she should be suited out in box eight, while Sunset Sherbet for Graeme Ferns and youngster Eight Green Cans for Harry Brown round out Darwin’s representation.

The high-quality racing does not stop there.

There are two other distance races on the card full of other Top End runners who are putting the final touches on their preparations before the Darwin Cup heats next week.

In the first of these which is race four on the card, Unchangeable for Graeme Scott steps out to this journey for the first time at Winnellie Park.

Indications are he should thrive at this trip.

He will face some stiff opposition from the likes of the Ron Phillips-trained Rioli, as well as Bar King Bro and Gus The Weapon from the Graeme Ferns kennel.

Race eight is the other 537m event and Unpossible is back to near her best for Andrew Lasker.

First race is at 6.06pm.
