Territory flavour on last day of the show
THOUSANDS of happy faces packed the Darwin showgrounds at Winnellie yesterday for the last day of the Royal Darwin Show.
Show chief executive Cherry Court said this year’s show – the 68th running and themed around the Chinese year of the pig – proved a success.
“It’s been a good show and we’re obviously looking forward to the wind-down as usual when you have had the biggest weekend of the year,” she said.
Yesterday’s fire-lighting and spear-throwing competition added a particular Territory flavour to the usual fixtures of rides, sideshows, arts and crafts.
Ms Court praised the high quality of the entries across the dozens of categories of baking, craft, produce, gardening and agricultural competitions this year.
“There have been some wonderfully high-quality entries and the stallholders have been brilliant,” she said.
The number of people through the gates was yet to be tallied late yesterday, but Ms Court said Friday was “absolutely heaving” and organisers were expecting a late rush yesterday ahead of the fireworks display which marks the end of festivities.
“We’re very, very pleased that the public turned up to support the show,” she said.
“Without their support, we wouldn’t be here.
“It’s the happy, smiling faces that make it all worthwhile.”
