Cate back in hunt for gold

- LAINE CLARK

AFTER a “bittersweet” silver medal, Cate Campbell is ready to get back to her winning ways at the World Swimming Championships in South Korea.

Campbell qualified second fastest for the 50m freestyle semi-finals at Gwangju behind world record holder and defending champion, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom.

Former world champion Campbell quickly regrouped after being relegated to 100m freestyle silver on Friday night by American Simone Manuel.

Campbell entered the 100m freestyle final as the hot favourite after her blistering relay form at the meet, inspiring gold for the women’s 4x100m freestyle and mixed medley teams.

But Olympic champion Manuel upstaged her, clocking an American record in lane one to beat the Australian by 0.39 seconds and defend her world title.

“It (100m silver) is a bit bittersweet,” Campbell said.

Nine athletes were among the 17 injured when flooring gave way and fell almost 3m at a South Korean nightclub at 3am yesterday.

The Australian women’s water polo team was there celebrating its bronze medal.

Athletes from the United States, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Italy and Brazil were treated for minor injuries.
