FAMILY and friends have farewelled popular businessman and former Wanderers football club president Steve “Sluggo” Olsson.

As the wet season rains bucketed down outside, around 200 mourners crammed into the Darwin Resthaven Chapel on Amy Johnson Drive to say goodbye.

The moving funeral was followed by an emotional farewell for the 60-year-old proprietor/agent for Elders Insurance in Darwin, at his favourite watering hole, the Airport Hotel on McMillans Road. With his empty bar stool in place, a final beer was poured in honour of Steve.

Close friend Darryl Window described the turnout in the pouring rain as fantastic and a wonderful send off for a great mate. Facebook tributes flowed from those who could not be there.

An avid Carlton supporter, Olsson arrived in Darwin from Adelaide in January, 1986 through his work in insurance.

The Wanderers’ stalwart is attributed with almost singlehandedly saving Wanderers during the club’s financial struggles through the 1990s

Steve Olsson is survived by his wife Dianne, daughters Mallory, Gaynor and Linda and seven grandchildren.
