NT spared as tropical low moves away

-

THE Top End’s recent spate of wild weather eased off yesterday with only a single gale warning still in place for the Beagle Bonaparte Coast and light winds and little rainfall in Darwin following overnight rain.

But it was a different story off the Territory coast where a potentially record breaking 562mm of rain fell on the island of Dum In Mirrie southwest of Darwin between 9am on Friday and 9am yesterday.

The heavy rains were a result of a tropical low that passed over the Top End after initial fears it could intensify into a cyclone failed to materialise.

But while Territorians are out of the firing line, the system is still expected to develop into a category 2 cyclone as it continues to track west in the waters north of Western Australia’s Kimberley region.

Darwin received a total of 68mm of rain overnight on Friday with further showers and storms predicted for the next week.

Meanwhile, in the Red Centre a dust storm moving through Alice Springs yesterday left the reported visibility at the town’s airport as low as 200m.
