YOUNG BIRDIE CLUBS OLD PROS
12yo golfer wins amateur series against adults
A 12-YEAR-OLD has beaten the odds and putted his way to the top at an interstate golf tournament.
Nicolas Stedman participated and won the Blitz Golf AM Series in Glenelg, Adelaide earlier this month.
An invite-only competition, he teed off against 44 golfers, including two other children and Adelaide Crows captain Taylor Walker. “The course was great, a lot of people were very nice,” Nicolas said.
“I reckon I played pretty good on the day.”
Nicolas competed in a series of rounds which eliminated players. In the last round the remaining players competed in a one-hole shootout, in which Nicolas was closest to the hole.
Mum Megan Stedman caddied for Nicolas and was proud of his achievement.
“It was very exciting, it brought a tear to my eye,” she said. “In our wildest dreams we didn’t know what to expect, for Nicolas to go out and win ...”
Nicolas was introduced to the game at eight years old by his grandfather Jeff Stedman and the pair have continued to play since. He hopes to continue and pursue a career in golf.
“It’s just fun and interesting,” Nicolas said.
“You don’t know how you’re going to play until you go play.
“You need to stay focused and not get cranky.”
“It’s definitely a mental game,” Mrs Stedman said.
In November Nicolas will compete in the Blitz AM Tournament Series Regional Finals in Darwin.
Until then Nicolas plans to continue practising at his home turf, Palmerston Golf and Country Club alongside his grandfather and brother Aiden, 11, who also competes.
