Refugees unite for Cup contest

- LUKE HAYES luke.hayes@news.com.au

THE Refugee World Cup from Football Without Borders is the embodiment of enabling sport as a platform to unite people from around the world.

Played today at Darwin Football Stadium, the Refugee World Cup tournament comprises 12 male and eight female squads, in a 7-a-side format, and is backed by Football Federation NT and Melaleuca Refugee Centre.

The tournament reflects Darwin’s broad multiculturalism.

Football Without Borders co-president Zainab Mohamud said it started when some of her friends suggested starting a community competition.

“It became a thing, people felt like they belonged to a community,” she said.

“The ladies often feel comfortable coming up to me for help. It’s been a great journey.”
