Get Forked

-

FROM milkshakes to doughnuts, the old-fashioned delights of the 1950s-era milk bar are alive and well in Coolalinga with the recent opening of a new eatery at the suburb’s main shopping centre.

Ice cream business Mini Melts NT has opened a new store at Coolalinga Central and expanded from solely selling ice cream to offering a full milk bar menu, including ice cream, doughnuts, hot dogs, pop corn, milkshakes, thick shakes and smoothies.

Mini Melts NT co-owner Trudi Duncan said the new milk bar concept had so far proved to be a hit.

“I do think it is nostalgic and it appeals to rural area residents,” she said.

“When we expand a bit we want to put the old-fashioned seats in … and have the black and white checks on the floor, like something out of the old Fonzie movies.

“The response has been really good, especially from the kids who are very excited they can get a milkshake, a doughnut and a hot dog at the same time.”

Ms Duncan said herself and co-owner Kerri Savidge planned to introduce the same milk bar menu at Mini Melts NT’s other store, in Cullen Bay, when they reopened it for the start of the dry season.
