Alabama Express repays trainer Moroney’s faith

- MICHAEL MANLEY

MIKE Moroney’s decision to back his faith in three-year-old colt Alabama Express was vindicated when the son of Redoute’s Choice defeated his more fancied older rivals to give him his 50th Group 1 win in the $500,000 Orr Stakes (1400m).

Moroney plotted a course with Alabama Express to try and win a Group 1 race late last year and this was the event he selected for him.

“You take these punts in life and now and again they pay off,” Moroney said.

And Anthony Freedman’s grip on winning a second consecutive Blue Diamond Stakes firmed after the spectacular finishing burst of his undefeated colt Hanseatic to win the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m, 2yo colts and geldings).
