CROCO-NUT: THE SALTIE THAT CHASES COCONUTS

- WILL ZWAR will.zwar@news.com.au

CRAFTY carpenters have used the help of a hungry crocodile to crack open their coconuts in East Arnhem Land.

Laynhapuy Homelands carpenter Peter McGregor said community members would often entice crocs up the shore for a feed with fish and meat but the salty didn’t seem too happy last weekend when all he received was a vegetarian feed. “On this day the guys were dropping coconuts on the beach which drew the croc out for a look-see at the action,” he said. “The croc got the shites as no meat was on offer and proceeded to crack the coconuts open for us.”

Trying to salvage what he could, the crocodile put on a show for the local community before realising there would be no meaty prize.

“After 10 minutes of posing for pictures, the croc returned to the water hungry and pissed off,” Mr McGregor said.

“The carpenters are a clever mob as we teach crocs to play fetch with random coconuts.”
