A SIMPLE $170 test could prevent the wrong medication being prescribed to three million people with depression but it is not subsidised by Medicare.

The speed with which a person metabolises antidepressants can affect whether the drugs work or produce side effects like panic attacks.

It’s estimated 30-50 per cent of people with a mental illness are being prescribed the wrong antidepressant.
