Darwin-based photographer documents our time in isolation
AFTER being left out of work because of the COVID-19 pandemic, two photographers decided to start documenting the ways people’s everyday lives had changed.
Darwin-based freelance photographer Helen Orr and Lismore-based photographer Elise Derwin have both taken to capturing the everyday lives of local people in their respective areas while in isolation, as a way to occupy their new-found free time.
“Because of COVID, we’ve both lost pretty much all of our work,” Orr said.
“So, obviously it’s shit, but it’s a great time to do a project.
“I’ve been looking at daily life in isolation, innovation and inspiration.
“People have had to reinvent themselves really quickly, I’m just looking for lots of little stories like that.”
Orr said another aim of the project was capturing this unprecedented event to look back on for years to come.
“It’s such an important story to tell,” she said.
“We can read the newspaper and find out what the Chief Minister has to say, but for me it’s about the mundane – like sitting at home for eight hours with my son and trying to think of things to do to keep him occupied.”
