STUDENTS are being encouraged to show their pride for their home in a new video competition as part of the NT Government’s reimagining of Territory Day.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner will today announce the competition, which urges students to submit a short video sharing what they love about living in the NT, using local artist Black Rock Band’s song Family.

Three schools – one each from the north, south and remote areas – will win a multimedia studio package worth $5000.

“It’s a tough time, but we’ve got a lot to be proud of in the Territory, so let’s show it,” Mr Gunner said.

Entries close on June 19, with winners decided by the Chief Minister’s Judging Panel.

The Territory Day initiative came as Mr Gunner maintained his decision to cancel cracker night despite calls by local distributors to bring back the event.

“Next year’s cracker night is going to be an absolute banger,” he said.

“It will be the best one ever.” Mr Gunner was supported by popular local stockist Territory Day Fireworks Store.

In a post on social media, the company wrote: “As much as we all love fireworks, anything that encourages us to hang out together in big groups is a bad idea at the moment and we don’t know when this will change. This is not something that can get cancelled last minute without serious financial impact on a lot of small businesses.”
