NEW DOG PARK FOR TOP END PET OWNERS

- WILL ZWAR Council Reporter

DOG walkers across the Top End could soon have a new permanent dog park in suburban Palmerston, with a temporary solution proving popular.

The Maurice Tce dog park which has been one of two open since May is set to be made permanent by Palmerston council, with a report deeming it “popular with dog owners since it opened”.

Dog owner Kristie Bambach said her dogs Tyson and Wissla enjoyed having the open space.

“Where I recently moved from in NSW, we don’t have dog parks so we just go to parks and hope for the best,” she said. “Having a secure area for your dog nearby, it’s a really good idea.”

Council will also look into adding agility equipment, water, bins and poo bag dispensers at the park.

The Gray resident said while the park was just out of walking range, she still hoped to get there once every few days with her pets.

“It’s safe for the dog and the community as well, it’s safe for everyone as long as you keep an eye on bigger dogs as well,” Ms Bambach said. “The more the better, if you just have one every few towns, it would end up very busy whereas if you have one nearby you can walk.”

Council will also look at developing a dog park in Zuccoli or Johnston, with a report to be brought to council in November.

Palmerston elected members will vote on whether to make the park permanent at Tuesday’s council meeting.
