Feds urge action on child sex crim lists

-

STATE and territory governments are refusing to hand over crucial data needed to establish a national child sex offenders’ register which would allow parents to phone a hotline and check if their kids are safe.

The Federal Government claims it has been 12 months since state and territory ministers agreed to collate evidence needed for the National Public Register, prompting accusations from Canberra they are withholding the vital data.

Community Safety Assistant Minister Jason Wood will this coming week write to his state and territory counterparts demanding they “urgently” provide child sex offenders data kept on police databases which will then be used to create a “name and shame” list that parents can use to identify predators in their community.

The Sunday Territorian understands the Federal Government favours a model which will allow parents to see the names and photos of thousands of paedophiles, as well as their date of birth, a physical description and location of their crimes.
