BRUTAL BROTHERS’ BIG EVENING OUT

St Mary’s star shines at half in league carnage

- NATHANIEL CHAMBERS

MERCILESS efforts in defence and attack saw Darwin Brothers post a blowout score of 90-4 over a battling South Darwin outfit in Round 4 of the 2020 NRL NT A-grade Premiership last night.

It was actually Souths who managed the first score of the game coming out of the blocks with pace and intensity to put Nelson Tinocoo over the line.

But that was where the fun ended for the Bunnies as Brothers quickly returned the favour through centre Rodney Baird scoring his first of three for the night.

Returning club stalwart Leon Rotumah scored next in his first of four tries and looked as if he has never been out of the game.

St Mary’s star and halfback Nick Yarran also showed his rugby league potential in his A-grade debut, directing the attack and scoring two tries himself, a feat shared by Lawrie Raymond and Caleb Boyd.

But it was the defensive pressure from Brothers early on led by lock Darcy Holmes and Terrance Green that coach Leon Cleal felt was most pivotal to his side’s victory.

“What I was most proud of wasn’t the scoreboard but the fact that we just played composed footy and that’s what we’re after,” Cleal told the NT News.

“Full credit to Souths, they never stopped trying and we knew they wouldn’t stop trying. But our boys stuck to a game plan and they played off the back of that.

“But where we really got away from them was our defence in the first 20 minutes which was awesome, and you win a lot of games off the back of setting that platform.

“It wasn’t about the scoreline but remaining focused at all times.”

Meanwhile, Litchfield returned to winning ways at home with a big 56-10 win over the Northern Sharks with Bears winger Jackson Smith notching three tries.
