He’s All Grunt leads a quality field of stayers in Top End’s Cup

- GREG ALDAM

WHILE it has been a local Carnival this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ladbrokes Local Darwin Cup has brought together a quality field of greyhound stayers, with the big annual race at Winnellie Park tonight.

Leading contender He’s All Grunt for Andrew Lasker has drawn ideally in box two, and if he can get any early luck he will be the one to beat.

But the Chris Blackmantrained Zipping Amy was impressive last week, and she does possess good early speed, while the Steele Boltontrained Rev Fred Sloy has good credentials over this distance.

Bolton would also be hoping that the good Spirit Monelli turns up. If he is anywhere near his best he would take a power of beating, although he has a tendency to mix his form, while the Graeme Scotttrained Great Knock is also a sneaky chance.

The Coolalinga Mowers Sprint is the other feature event tonight, for the open sprinters over 312m, and leading trainer Bolton has Recreational flying and will be a leading contender. He will meet with stiff opposition from the likes of Sunset Sherbet, who has drawn nicely out in box eight for Graeme Ferns, while youngsters Aeroplane Rose for Scott and Eight Jewels for Ron Phillips both have the ability to spring a surprise.

In race three, Jack Long is closing in on a win and Sonya

Seubert, who recently returned to the training ranks, has him going well, while later in the night the Greg Milne-trained Candy Paint will be looking to make it back-to-back victories in race five over 383m.

The first race is at 6.46pm and the gates are open from 4pm.

It is $10 for adults and children under 18 are free.
