Helping to connect entire community
City of Darwin is committed to fostering inclusion and community connectivity for all people who are homeless or without safe shelter. Homelessness is a very serious issue and the council is delighted to be partnering with NT Shelter during Homelessness Week to raise awareness of the causes and impacts of homelessness in Darwin.
Our Assertive Outreach Officers provide support to vulnerable and at-risk people, connecting them with services as needed. This includes short-term housing options, health and support with public transport.
To support at-risk young people, our Youth Team connects through a range of programs and partnerships. One of the key events is the annual couch-surfing event held in partnership with Anglicare to highlight youth homelessness.
City of Darwin’s library services offer a safe space for community members, and access to computers so people can access online services.
We are hosting an event at our Casuarina Library on Tuesday, August 3, from 8am-midday to help support and engage with people experiencing, or are at risk of, homelessness. Activities include a barbecue, refreshments, haircuts, care packs, and clothing and laundry vouchers. There will also be live entertainment, library tours, roaming support, information stalls and therapy dogs.
City of Darwin is working towards a collaborative approach to connect our vulnerable people to essential services to help permanently reduce the incidence of homelessness in Darwin.
We need to continue to invest in responsive and innovative services that connect homeless people with support they need.
Homelessness is a very important issue and Homelessness Week is all about raising that awareness and educating people so we can make a difference.
