From bush to Group 2

- BRAD WATERS

THERE is little point in scouring the history books looking for the last horse to win a Mildura Cup and a Group 2 race in the same season.

Sierra Sue achieved the remarkable feat with her success in Saturday’s P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield.

The Group 1 Memsie Stakes could be Sierra Sue’s target.

The $8 chance proved too strong for 2019 ATC Derby winner Angel Of Truth ($31) and consistent performer Red Can Man ($5) in the $300,000 feature.

Sierra Sue won the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes at Flemington last spring.

But she struggled in the autumn.

Co-trainer Natalie Young said the stable knew it had Sierra Sue back to her best after her solid fourth at Flemington on July 17.

Young said she and training partner Trent Busuttin decided to send the mare to Mildura with the aim of boosting her confidence before a spring campaign.

And that plan worked perfectly.

“I think that little trip to Mildura has really brought this filly (mare) on,” Young said.

“We always thought she had another good preparation in her and she has shown it today.

“She’s come out today and she has really got that turn of foot back in her.”
