GARY SAYS GOODBYE TO DARWIN COUNCIL

- PHILLIPPA BUTT

AFTER almost 10 years representing the Waters ward of Darwin Council, Gary Haslett looks set to lose his seat.

Mr Haslett ran for both mayor and alderman in last week’s election but brought in just 8.5 per cent of firstpreference votes by the latest count on Friday. Instead, Waters looks likely to be represented by newcomers Sylvia Klonaris and Brian O’Gallagher, as well as incumbent Justine Glover.

Mr Haslett said he was grateful for his time on council.

“I’m pleased with all the things I achieved on council,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of work done around Malak, the gardens and the parks as well as the shopping centre and market area. The area’s really been activated.”

He said he was also glad Garramilla Blvd was finally built.

But Mr Haslett warned future aldermen to be careful with money.

“For a decade the council has been putting money away, saving it,” he said.

“Council has to be careful in the future that it doesn’t run those savings down too much and put the rates up. Like everyone else in Darwin, I’m a part owner and the council is just a body corporate so I still have a big interest in what happens in Darwin.”
