Cup king headlines schedule

- GREG ALDAM

THERE are 11 greyhound races that will be keenly contested at Winnellie Park on Sunday night, the July Plate final being the headline act over the 537m distance.

It has brought together a solid field of local greyhounds, including Darwin Cup winner Mighty Marshall and kennel mates in Go Quantum, who was an impressive winner in his heat last week, and Sketchy Butler, with all three having genuine hopes for trainer Andrew Lasker.

The depth to the race does not stop there.

The Graeme Ferns-trained Bow Axel is looking to be a greyhound on the way up over this testing journey, while Ron Phillips would have been pleased with Bowden drawing box one. And if he brings his best form the enigmatic Percy’s Dream can run a big race for Adam Poulter.

Leading trainer Steele Bolton was back to his best with four winners last meeting and on Sunday night he does appear to have plenty of chances across the card.

They include Old School Cool in race two, who ran a scintillating time over this distance last start and looks hard to beat once again, in the following race Pepperberry has drawn nicely and will be right in the mix, while later in the night Weeona Pearl jumping from box eight should get a lovely clear run early.

Another trainer who is going well is Rob Brown, and in race one My Shout Simon is capable of breaking his maiden status. The following race he has Zothan’s Magic engaged and warrants respect, while Saint Wallace in race 10 has found a suitable assignment.

Other notable hopes include Shrek’s Storm in race four for Ferns and he will be very hard to beat over 537m going on his latest start, and Great Knock is more than capable in race eight for Bolton.

To finish the night, the Simon Nathanael-trained Pie On Wednesday may be the way to go to finish the night off well for the punters at the Territory’s home of greyhound racing.

First race is set for 7.10pm NT time.
