Tender out for 75 homes
Opportunity open to manage affordable housing
A TENDER to manage homes in Tennant Creek and Alice Springs has opened for community housing providers and real estate agents.
The NT government tender provides the opportunity to manage 75 affordable housing homes across the regions.
The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering all asset and tenancy management and day-to-day program delivery such as: accessing eligibility, allocation of dwellings, entering lease agreements, undertaking inspections, collecting rent and ensuring quality repairs and maintenance.
Territory Families and Urban Housing Minister Kate Worden said the government’s vision was to work with stakeholders to develop a contemporary and affordable housing sector benefiting communities.
“Finding new and innovative ways to revamp our social and affordable housing model will support jobs, tenants and local communities and is a win for the Territory,” she said.
“This tender is about growing our social and affordable housing stocks for our providers. Over 1000 homes are managed by providers.
“We know this is the smart thing to do. It provides more support for our housing residents and modernises our public housing model.”
Ms Worden said the government had an upcoming pipeline of new opportunities to develop and form a new social, affordable community housing system.
The tender comes after Somerville Community Services chief executive Lawson Broad wrote in the Sunday Territorian recently about the NT government’s lack of progress in developing the community housing sector.
“Since 2016, the Northern Territory government has had a commitment to develop the community housing sector and transfer 750 homes to providers,” he wrote.
“The lack of housing supply and affordability in the Territory is at crisis point … community housing will save the government money, increase funding to the Northern Territory, grow housing supply, stimulate construction, create jobs, and provide better housing options. It is not a difficult concept and there are well over 100,000 community housing dwellings across Australia worth over $10bn.”
