NHULUNBUY electrical apprentice Savanne Canobie took out the top gong on Saturday night at the Northern Territory Training Awards.

In its 66th year, the awards celebrate the achievements of Territorians in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector.

Nominations were received from across the Territory, including Tennant Creek, Nhulunbuy, Katherine, Gapuwiyak, Alice Springs and Darwin.

Ms Canobie won the Austin Asche Apprentice of the Year Award. Schoolbased apprentice or Trainee of the Year was awarded to Elyssia Tallon

Rosas.

Large Employer of the Year was awarded to St John Ambulance. The Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education was named Large Training Provider of the Year.

Jobs and Training Minister Paul Kirby congratulated the recipients and said there were 3889 active trainees and apprentices in the Territory, a 22 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2020.

“The past 18 months has been a challenging time for the VET sector due to Covid-19, yet still the sector continues to boom in the Territory,” Mr Kirby said.

“All of the finalists can be extremely proud of what they have achieved, whether they’re starting their career journey or teaching valuable skills to the next generation of workers.”

Some winners will represent the Territory at the Australian Training Awards.
