HEATS FIRST STEP TO A COOL PRIZE

- GREG ALDAM

THE premier race over 383m for Darwin greyhounds has four strong heats on Sunday night.

That will be part of a strong 10-race card at Winnellie Park.

The first two runners from each heat will progress to the $7000 final next Sunday night.

Heat one sees the return of Lovely Xena from Western Australia.

She is under the care of Darwin trainer Ron Phillips.

Jumping from box one she is the one to beat.

But she will be kept honest by Darwin Cup winner Mighty Marshall for Andrew Lasker and the in-form Rockstar Jaimee from the Simon Nathanael kennel.

In the next heat, another Phillips runner in Ohia has solid credentials, while Gippsland Storms for Graeme Ferns and Aeroplane Rose from the Adam Poulter kennel have plenty of ability.

Leading trainer Steele Bolton looks to hold all the aces in heat three, with Old School Cool running some slick times over this distance in recent times and jumping from box one.

The last of the heats appears to be even with Sparky’s Chance for Andrew Lasker, and both Poulter runners in Good Bye Vince and Wired among the major contenders.

That is not the end of the competitive racing.

There will also be a lower grade race on the night, where Ferns would be hoping that his runner in Shrek’s Storm brings his best form.

First race is set down for 7.21pm NT time, with the gates open from 5.30pm.
