Young clear winner as by-election count finalised

- THOMAS MORGAN

THE remaining outstanding votes for the Daly by-election have been tallied, meaning the count has finally been declared over.

Postal and declaration votes were added on Friday night, with Territory Labor’s Dheran Young receiving 2022 votes after preferences.

The CLP’s Kris Civitarese received 1582 votes after preferences. Independents Rebecca Jennings and Wayne Connop received 545 and 203 votes respectively.

Mr Young, who was sworn into parliament last week, received 45.2 per cent of the first preference vote.

The Daly result was historic in that it was the first time in the Territory that the government had managed to win a seat off the opposition in a by-election.

The result is virtually unheard of at the national level.

Polls closed for the Daly byelection on September 11 but the NT Electoral Commission was still able to receive postal ballots that had been sent before that date.

The seat takes in a vast remote electorate southwest of Darwin, stretching from Berry Springs to Batchelor, Adelaide River, Pine Creek, Wadeye and Timber Creek.

There were 3604 formal votes.
