Boost for brain study

RETIRED top-level athletes’ brains will be at the centre of new research into concussion and injury in sport.

The federal government has announced it will inject $340,000 to improve research and prevention of brain injuries and concussion­s.

The comprehens­ive study will draw on the expertise of medical profession­als and researcher­s and will be undertaken in conjunctio­n with the University of Newcastle and the University of Canberra.

Researcher­s will evaluate the brain health of retired elite athletes to make their findings.

The concussion and brain health project will start this year and be delivered by 2024.
