Prost! to Oktoberfest

- FLOSS ADAMS

PEOPLE holding large mugs of frothy beers while wearing traditional German clothing in Darwin may seem foreign but for one day a year it is normal.

Crowds of people celebrated Oktoberfest at the Bay at the Darwin Turf Club on Saturday wearing their finest lederhosen.

Deneeka Edwards said her favourite part of Oktoberfest was the energy and seeing people having a great time with a couple of beers.

“We’re here for a mate’s

birthday so it was her idea to come,” Ms Edwards said.

“It has brought us all out of our comfort zones and we’re having a great time.”

Tiarne Coxhill introduced herself in German. “Ich bin Tiarne,” Ms Coxhill said.

While everyone was blowing froth off some cold ones, some entertainment was provided with bratwurst-eating competitions.

The crowd was very invested and engaged with one man yelling, “Stand up to swallow it, you can’t swallow bent over”.

The winners took home a

$50 gift voucher: Alix Marshall took out the women's competition and Robert Owens won the men’s.

Jack Zalunardo and Liam Cottrell attended the event in their strapping German outfits, Mr Zalunardo saying he loved the atmosphere of Oktoberfest.

“I’ve never seen any sort of bad vibes at Oktoberfest,” he said.

“Everyone’s really happy, it brings everyone together and people are really cheery.”

Mr Cottrell loves the beer at Oktoberfest: “It tastes good and goes down well.”
