$6.5m to help fight weeds

THE Territory government has invested in developing weed-fighting strategies across the NT.

The 2021 budget has allocated more than $6.5m to be injected into weed management, which includes funding for the successful Gamba Army.

Environment Minister Eva Lawler said it was important Territorians stayed on top and in control of the spread of the weeds.

“In the Territory there is a continued risk of introduction of new weeds and spread of existing weeds by deliberate and accidental actions of people,” Ms Lawler said.

“For example, weeds can escape from gardens, be accidentally transported with livestock, be spread by slashers and sold in hay or landscaping products.”

Weeds have major economic, environmental and social impacts in the Territory.

The strategy aims to protect the Darwin region’s natural, economic and cultural assets by identifying threats, regional weed management and creating achievable goals.

Weeds management on Aboriginal lands will also be supported through the NT Government’s Aboriginal Ranger grants program.
