Biden’s political jargon proves pretty annoying
THE most annoying, persistent, impenetrable and misleading phrases used by politicians in speeches and interviews have been ranked.
And we have a clear winner of the 2021 Political Jargon of the Year Awards: US President Joe Biden’s “Build back better”.
Polifiller, run by a small team led by communications adviser Hamish Thompson, says the term and similar phrases “suggest that things will be even better than they were before the pandemic”.
“The gamble is that any improvement will be enough for citizens who have spent many months Googling, Zooming and Netflixing at home in their pants,” the UKbased group said.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison came in second with “supercharging the safety net”. “This sounds disturbingly like an electric fence,” the judges said.
“The misguided theory here is ‘add a vaguely tech vibe to something fairly modest and it will sound amazing’.”
Third and fifth place were reminiscent of former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian: “Let me be clear” and “Can I say from the outset”.
