Siblings enjoy day out as dominant Waratah brings Bombers down

- IAN BUTTERWORTH

WARATAH continued its winning ways following a 16.19 (115) to 8.11 (59) victory over the Tiwi Bombers at Gardens Oval.

Although Tiwi bolstered its big-bodied playing stocks with the inclusion of Queensland trio Blake Ericson, Jackson Fisher and Max Lower, they were more than matched by an effective red-and-white midfield.

Siblings Dylan and Will Collis, Brodie Carroll and ball magnet Robert Turnbull enjoyed a day out at Gardens.

Carroll is enjoying his time in the midfield and while happy with the win, he is conscious of the need to be more efficient in front of goal.

“This is the second time we’ve been wasteful in front and just maybe we were all trying to get on the scoreboard,” Carroll said. “But while we still won, when we play Saints or Nightcliff, we can’t afford to waste opportunities.”

It wasn’t until the 11-minute mark when Waratah small forward Jayden Magro goaled that the goalless deadlock finally broke.

A defensive Bombers error and warranted free kick to Harrison Kitschke doubled the red-and-whites’ score a minute later and when Magro got his second, Tahs led by 20-points at the first break.

A strong mark and sixpointer from the goalsquare by Kim Kantilla and another to William Dulla got the islanders going in the second, but that was the trigger for a Waratah wake-up with Tahs booting the next four majors.

Tahs winger Joel Crocker goaled early in the third and the floodgates opened while the Bombers failed to register a goal. Although the islanders rallied early in the last quarter, including a wonderful 55 metre set kick goal from the mercurial Harley Puruntatameri, it was always going to be too little too late.
