Mighty field assembled for Memorial battle

- GREG ALDAM

A SOLID eight-race program to be contested at Winnellie Park should provide plenty of high-quality racing action on Sunday night.

The main event is the Bret Kajetanski Memorial over the testing 537m journey and it has brought together a strong field of stayers to honour the former committee member and owner, who no doubt would be very pleased to see the calibre of greyhound in the race named after him.

They include 2021 Darwin Cup winner Mighty Marshall from the Andrew Lasker kennel, the promising Shrek’s Storm for Graeme Ferns – and the enigmatic Percy’s Dream for Adam Poulter and Great Knock for Steele Bolton must have claims as well.

Add to this the open sprint over 312m, and Chris Blackman would have been pleased when Zipping Django drew box one which brings him into the race.

However, he will need to be at his best with the proven Aeroplane Rose returning tonight for Poulter and no doubt Kay Okay from the Ferns kennel will have admirers.

To open proceedings the Rob Brown-trained Barney Sun was good at his debut run, and he gets a great chance to break his maiden status, while Brown would also hope Petite Princess in race five can find some early luck which would bring her right into that race.

Other notable hopes on the card include the Ron Phillipstrained Penny Piper in race three, who was impressive winning at her first start on the Winnellie Park track on Wednesday.

Hardaway Rocket is going well for Lasker and in race seven he will be hard to beat, while to close the night out Lovely Xena jumping from box one for Phillips could be the way to go for the punters.

First race is at 7.11pm, with the gates open from 5.30pm.
