Paramedics punched and scratched in attack while helping a patient

- PHILLIPPA BUTT

TWO paramedics have been punched and scratched as they tried to help an injured patient.

At 4pm on Friday, the two St John Ambulance paramedics were flagged down to assist an injured person at the intersection of Rothdale Rd and Sawyer St.

While providing treatment, a woman approached and pulled off their personal protective equipment before attacking them.

The paramedics suffered scratches and bruises, with inquiries under way to identify and find the woman.

Watch Commander Kaye Pemberton said assaulting emergency workers was completely unacceptable, while St John Ambulance Services director Andrew Thomas said it was another “senseless attack on our staff”.

“The nature of this incident could place our staff and the community at risk,” Mr Thomas said.

“This type of assault is traumatic for the staff involved, as an organisation St John NT deplores these attacks and will rally behind the staff to provide them with the support they need.

“These type of incidents could have a much broader impact on the community, particularly at a time when we are all working so hard in response to the pandemic.”

United Workers Union NT secretary Erina Early said attacks on workers needed to stop.

“Assaulting paramedics and patient transport officers is not acceptable for any reason,” Ms Early said. “This needs to stop as every paramedic that is injured is one less paramedic here to help you, your family or friends.

“Stop hurting those who are here to help you.”
