TERRITORY WORKS OF ART RECEIVE NATIONAL NOD

- BETHANY GRIFFITHS

SIX outstanding Top End street art works are finalists in a national competition.

Shadforth Lane in Darwin is in the running to be named Australia’s Best Street Art Laneway, while Vincent Lingiari on Bennett St, Kaff-eine and Mimmim’s mural in Nightcliff (pictured) and Gunimidjina Gwala Daraniki, by Artback NT, are also up for gongs.

The Big Rivers Portrait Series in Katherine is a finalist in the Best Street Art Trail and Best Street Art Tour.

Port Darwin MLA Paul Kirby said it was great to hear that six works have been shortlisted in the Australian Street Art Awards.

“This is a tribute to the Territory’s talent,” Mr Kirby said. “Our government has supported street art projects across the Territory because they add colour, vibrancy and flair to our streets and laneways.”

David Collins, from Proper Creative, an organisation that partly funds the artworks, was particularly thrilled to see a gem of the city being acknowledged.

“To see Shadforth Lane recognised, which only features the works of local artists, celebrates the quality of art we have,” Mr Collins said.

The Australian Art Awards will be held online during the Art of Attraction Tourism Summit on Friday, March 4.
