TRIBUTES FLOW FOR AN AUSSIE SPORTING LEGEND

A STATE memorial will farewell Australian sporting icon and former Governor of Victoria John Landy, with tributes so flowing go from across the globe to honour the man who ho embodied athletic excellence as well as human decency.

Landy’s family accepted the offer of a State Memorial l Service so the community could pay ay tribute to his legacy following his death at the age of 91 at his Castlemain­e home in Victoria on Thursday.

Landy entered sporting folklore for his selfless act to stop and help fellow runner Ron

Clarke to his feet after he had tripped mid-race during the 1956 Australian ust a a Mile Championsh­ip at Melbourne’s Melbou Olympic Park – before bef chasing down the leaders le to win the race. The moment was honoured h as the Finest Sporting Moment of the

Century Ce by the Sport Australian Austr Hall of Fame. As the second man to break the four minute mile, Landy (pictured) was a member of the Australian Olympic team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics where he claimed bronze in the 1500m.
