Hitotsu enters record books

- BRAD WATERS

TO say fortune favours the brave would do a disservice to Hitotsu’s win in the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington on Saturday.

Trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace were brave enough to aim the Victoria Derby winner at the 1600m Guineas first-up.

But Hitotsu was classy enough to get the job done for his trainers and Melbourne Cup-winning owners Ozzie Kheir and John O’Neill.

The colt became the first three-year-old since the brilliant Mahogany in 1994 to win the Victoria Derby and Australian Guineas double.

Unlike Mahogany and the other horse to complete the double, King’s High in 1989, Hitotsu ($8) won the Derby and Australian Guineas in consecutive starts.
