Missing: croc trap illegally cut free leaves park rangers furious

- FLOSS ADAMS

NT park rangers are livid after the discovery that a croc trap in Top End waters is suspected to have been cut free and still remains missing.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security is asking members of the public to report any sightings of the croc trap, which costs about $8000, free floating in the harbour.

Senior wildlife ranger Ian Hunt said it appeared someone had cut the ropes used to secure the 3m trap in a creek at Wagait Beach and pushed it into the harbour.

“Traps are there to help us remove crocodiles that pose a danger to human life,” Mr Hunt said.

“Because someone thought cutting a trap free was a great idea, we now have to take the time and money to replace the trap and also try to locate the original.

“This is not only a stupid thing to do but also illegal.”

So far this year a total of 54 saltwater crocodiles have been captured across the Top End and in 2021, a total of 308.

The aim of crocodile management is to reduce the risk of attacks.

The most recent sighting of the trap was in Shoal Bay last weekend, however numerous patrols have been unable to locate it.

“It also poses a danger to other harbour users who aren’t expecting to come across a 3m metal cage floating in the ocean,” Mr Hunt said.

“Any assistance from the public to locate the trap will be very much appreciated.”

The Parks and Wildlife Commission would like to remind Territorians that the possible fine for interfering with a crocodile trap is $7750 or six months’ imprisonment.

The crocodile management team urges anyone who has spotted the trap to contact them immediately on 0419 822 859.
