Why your odds of winning lotto could change

- RYAN YOUNG

A PROPOSAL to add more numbers to the Oz Lotto draw would make the chance of hitting the jackpot far less likely for Australians if adopted.

Tabcorp, Oz Lotto’s parent company, has asked regulators for approval to add another two numbers to the weekly Tuesday draw.

Currently there are 45 numbers in the draw and the new proposal would make it 47.

While the chance of winning the jackpot would go down if the change comes into force, Tabcorp also wants to put the price of Oz Lotto tickets up by 10 cents.

The changes mean a punter’s chance of winning the division one prize pool would drop from 1 in 45,379,620 to 1 in 62,891,499.

While the top prize might be further out of reach, the chance of winning any prize at all from the weekly draw at all could increase if the changes come into force.

Currently a ticket purchaser has a 1 in 55 chance of winning a prize after buying an Oz Lotto ticket. If the changes come into effect the chance of winning a prize would be 1 in 51.

The minimum Oz Lotto jackpot would also rise from $2m to $3m if the changes are approved.

Victoria has agreed to the changes and other states will need to give the green light before Oz Lotto can implement its proposal.
