Defeat Verry surprising

THE race seemed to be going to script. Verry Elleegant moving ominously into the Rosehill straight.

What happened next was a surprise to most, except Montefilia’s trainer, David Payne.

Montefilia responded and resisted Verry Elleegant’s challenge before careering away to win the Group 1 $700,000 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

“Verry Elleegant is a fighter and wins a lot of close finishes – but this mare is a fighter, too,’’ Payne said.

Montefilia ($9.50) drew away from Verry Elleegant to win the Ranvet by a widening two lengths.
