$10m for Indigenous business

- THOMAS MORGAN

A TERRITORY-BASED notfor-profit will receive $10m to build a new Darwin-based employment hub for Indigenous Australians, with satellite offices to be built across the NT.

The Northern Territory Indigenous Business Network (NTIBN) will deliver the Territory’s first Indigenous Business and Employment Hub. It will be the fourth such centre opened in Australia, with the Darwin office to have satellite bases across the Territory.

Indigenous Australians Minister Ken Wyatt said the NTIBN was the best candidate to deliver services, to help Indigenous Territorians find a job or establish businesses.

A TERRITORY-based notfor-profit will receive $10m to build a new Darwin employment hub for Indigenous Australians, with satellite offices to be built across the NT.

The Northern Territory Indigenous Business Network (NTIBN) will deliver the Territory’s first Indigenous Business and Employment Hub.

It will be the fourth such centre opened in Australia, after western Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.

The federal government said there would also be satellite offices across the Territory, but did not say where.

Indigenous Australians Minister Ken Wyatt said the NTIBN was the best candidate to deliver services, to help Indigenous Territorians find a job or establish businesses.

“The Northern Territory Indigenous Business Network are well-connected to businesses across the NT and have a strong understanding of the unique business landscape of the Territory,” Mr Wyatt said.

“Their delivery of this hub will ensure Indigenous businesses are able to access services and guidance, both in person or online. They will support businesses at all stages, in particular how to scale and grow a business.”

The hub will include training facilities and advice toward accessing government services.

“This is huge potential for growth in the NT,” Mr Wyatt said.

NT senator Sam McMahon said she welcomed any new facilities that would help open up prospects for Indigenous Australians.

“It’s something that I know that the federal government’s been very focused on is getting more Indigenous people into both business and employment,” Senator McMahon said.

“Everything we’ve done really doesn’t seem to deliver any results, so I’m quite keen … for a new approach.”
