Worker dies in coal mine

-

A CONTRACT worker has died in an underground mine in Queensland after he suffered critical head injuries.

The man, 65, was working at the Moranbah North mine, about 210km west of Mackay.

Emergency services were called to the Anglo American-owned site about 10pm on Friday after receiving reports a man had suffered serious injuries during a “lifting” incident.

Anglo American chief Tyler Mitchelson said the company was devastated by the loss of one of its workers.

“Our focus is on supporting our colleague’s family and all those involved in the tragic incident,” he said.

The company has halted mining activities at Moranbah North, and Resources Safety and Health Queensland confirmed it was investigating the incident.
